Can an AI agent really run an autonomous business? What the viral videos leave out
What happened
We reviewed a popular video in which a creator said an AI agent had built and was running a business for them, more or less on its own.
The tools in the video were real. The agent really did the work it was shown doing.
But the traffic and the revenue didn't come from the agent. They came from the creator's existing audience of more than 500,000 followers. The agent automated the work. The audience was already there.
Why the story is misleading
It's not exactly a lie. It's a missing step. "The agent built the business" leaves out the part where a large audience was already waiting to buy.
For someone starting from zero followers, that's the hard part. Automating the posting, the emails or the product pages is now the easy part. Getting people to see any of it is not.
We know this from our own numbers. A new account with very few followers gets very little reach, however good the automation is.
The same question applies to vendor demos. A Salesforce agent demo that shows a pipeline filling itself is running on data someone already had: the leads, the history, the accounts.
How to check a claim like this, step by step
- Ask where the distribution comes from. Followers, an email list, paid ads, an existing customer base. If the answer is "the agent," look closer.
- Separate the work from the audience. Which steps did the agent do, and which existed before it?
- Check the starting point. What did the account, list or business look like before the agent?
- Look for the costs left out. Tools, model usage, the human time to fix mistakes.
- Copy the workflow, not the result. The automation may be worth building. Just don't expect the revenue without the audience.
How to check your own plan
Run a planted-mistake test on your expectations:
- Write down where your first 100 visitors will come from. If the answer is "the agent will find them," that's the gap.
- Ask ChatGPT or Claude to critique your plan. Tell it: "Assume I have no audience. What breaks?"
- Track reach separately from output. Posts made by the agent is not the same number as people who saw them.
