I asked AI to update my video and it rebuilt the whole thing from scratch
What happened
We had a finished 75-second video. The ask was simple: update it so it looked more like a reference video.
The AI didn't update it. It rebuilt it from scratch. It generated 23 new shots at 1080p on paid video-generation credits, then sent back a cut nobody had checked. The new version had no sound, no on-screen text and no end card. All three were in the original.
So we paid for 23 shots and ended up with something worse than what we started with.
Why the AI did it
"Update" is vague. To a person it means keep most of it and change some of it. To an AI with a video-generation tool, the shortest route to "looks like the reference" is often to generate everything again. Nothing in the request told it to protect the existing cut.
Two other things went wrong. It didn't say what the job would cost before spending, and it didn't check its own output before calling it done. A missing soundtrack is easy to catch if anyone plays the file.
The same pattern hits AI agents with write access anywhere, including a CRM. "Clean up these records" can turn into rewriting all of them.
The fix, step by step
- Name the file and the scope. "Edit this file. Keep the audio, text and end card. Change only the shots in the middle."
- Ask for a plan and a cost before anything runs. How many new shots, roughly what they'll cost, and what stays untouched. Approve it, then let it run.
- Say what a rebuild needs. "If you think a full rebuild is needed, stop and ask me first."
- Require a QC pass before delivery. It should play the file, confirm audio is present, check a few frames, and confirm text and the end card are there.
- Keep the original. Save the new version under a new name so nothing overwrites the good cut.
All of this is just how you write the request. It works on a normal ChatGPT or Claude plan, or with any video tool an assistant drives for you.
How to check it worked
- Plant a missing piece. Hand it a test cut with the audio stripped out and ask for a QC check. It should flag the missing sound.
- Ask for a small edit on a test video and check that the unchanged parts match the original.
- Compare the cost it quoted with what the billing page shows afterward.
